Fortress Rum™ Brings 300 Year Old Rum Trade to Life

Louisbourg, Cape Breton – Nova Scotia's Authentic Seacoast Distilling Company Ltd., together with Parks Canada and Fortress Louisbourg Association, today unveiled its new brand for the rum that has been patiently maturing in oak barrels in the Magazin du Roi at Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site since its arrival last September. Fortress Rum™, the first rum to be matured onsite in almost 300 years, is sold in traditional bottles and sealed in wax, capturing the authentic spirit of New France’s historic rum trade.

“We’re excited to launch Fortress Rum™ at the Fortress of Louisbourg,” said Authentic Seacoast Distilling Company President Glynn Williams. "We believe that no other spirits in the world are being matured today in an active 18th century seaside fortress. Facing the full brunt of the North Atlantic and its highly variable weather, the Fortress’ unique microclimate adds a distinct character to the carefully selected, aged Caribbean rums that our friends have been protecting here since last fall."

In the 18th century, Louisbourg was one of North America's busiest seaports and France's centre of trade and military strength in the New World. Caribbean rum was a major trading good of the times. It was brought ashore in large oak casks through the Frédéric Gate and rolled into storehouses.

Fortress Rum™ provides us with a unique opportunity to bring the story of the 18th century rum trade to life at the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site,” said Blair Pardy, Superintendent for Parks Canada's Cape Breton Field Unit. “Maturing a high-quality spirit at the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site helps us create memorable experiences for our visitors through enhanced programs and tours.”

"Fortress Rum™ builds upon our highly successful experience with Authentic Seacoast Company creating Full Steam Coffee Co.’s Louisbourg 1713 French Roast,” said Mitch McNutt, General Manager, Fortress Louisbourg Association. “This rum is a long-term collaboration with Authentic Seacoast and we look forward to new vintages of the spirit in the years to come.”

Fortress Rum™ is available at the Fortress' period restaurants and throughout Nova Scotia at select Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation (NSLC) stores and other fine spirits retailers. Read more about Fortress Rum at: http://www.fortressrum.com
