RUM RETURNS TO FORTRESS OF LOUISBOURG NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE
After almost 300 years, rum is once again being stored behind the massive stone walls of the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site.
Authentic Seacoast Distilling Company Ltd., Parks Canada and Fortress Louisbourg Association are collaborating on a multi-year project to enhance the visitor experience at the Fortress through an authentic interpretation of the historical rum trade of 18th century New France. The Magazin du Roi will serve as a warehouse to mature carefully selected Caribbean aged rums for use in special edition Authentic Seacoast Distilling Company rums.
"The Fortress' Magazin du Roi offers a truly unique venue as a spirits warehouse," said Authentic Seacoast Distilling Company President Glynn Williams. "We believe that no other spirits in the world are being matured today in an active 18th century seaside fortress. Facing the full brunt of the North Atlantic and its highly variable weather, we anticipate that the microclimate at the Fortress will contribute to a very distinct character in our rums."
In the 18th century, Louisbourg was one of North America's busiest seaports and France's centre of trade and military strength in the New World. Exchanged for Nova Scotia fish and lumber, Caribbean rum was a major trading good of the times. It was brought ashore in large oak casks through the Frederick Gate and rolled into storehouses, where it was inventoried and stored for both local consumption and for later re-export to France.
"After the successful launch of Full Steam Coffee Co.'s commemorative Louisbourg 1713 French Roast coffee, we are honoured to be working again with Parks Canada and Fortress Louisbourg Association to share and interpret experiences that are important to the understanding of our common heritage in an authentic and memorable manner," Williams added.
"Following our successful partnerships last year, we are pleased to partner with Authentic Seacoast Company and Fortress Louisbourg Association. We are excited to tell the story of the 18th century rum trade as a way to connect with our visitors in a meaningful way," said Chip Bird, Field Unit Superintendent for Parks Canada's Cape Breton Field Unit. "Offering a high quality spirit, that has matured on-site, for tasting and sale at the Fortress helps us meet the needs of our visitors who are often looking for authentic, local products with a unique story or a special connection to the place they just visited.”
"We look forward to a long-term collaboration that hopefully will see the creation of a 20 year rum and possibly, later vintages in the years ahead by Authentic Seacoast," said Mitch McNutt, General Manager, Fortress Louisbourg Association. "We see this as another way to tell the story of the Fortress of Louisbourg to a broader group of people, including those beyond the walls."
Authentic Seacoast Distilling Company's craft-blended over proof rum will be available for sale to the public at the Fortress' period restaurants, and throughout Nova Scotia at the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation and other fine retailers in 2015. The rum will also be used in rum tasting programs and other events at the Fortress in 2015.
