Top 10 Winter Activities on the Nova Scotia Authentic Seacoast

Winter is a time for romance on Nova Scotia’s Chedabucto Bay with long star-filled nights and evening fires to keep you warm. With much of the Bay closing for the winter months, the Authentic Seacoast Properties become the getaway headquarters for people wanting to escape to the beauty and adventure of the Eastern Shore. Here are our top 10 winter activities on the Nova Scotia Authentic Seacoast, adding another season to the Authentic Seacoast 101, the definitive list of more than 101 things to do along the shores of Chedabucto Bay, the largest bay on the Atlantic Coast.

1. Snow Shoeing at Osprey Shores Peninsula
Sign out some snow shoes from the Guysborough Fitness Centre (they’re free!) and take in the breathtaking views from the Osprey Shores Golf Resort peninsula.

2. The 18th Century Hearth Fireplace in DesBarres Manor
Built in 1837, the original hearth fireplace still stands in DesBarres Manor Inn.  Curl up on a love seat by the fire with some tea and warm cookies or a glass of red wine from the Manor’s cellar.

3. Coasting Parties
On Chedabucto Bay we call tobogganing coasting and the road down to Mussel Cove is a popular spot.  If you don’t have your own, check in as a guest at DesBarres Manor Inn and they’ll give you a magic carpet to ride. It’s a fun, curving ride down to the dock.

4. Puzzle Building
The private dining room at DesBarres Manor is the puzzle building centre during the winter months. There’s a big collection, so plan a long stay.

5. Star Gazing
With beautiful clear dark skies, the Authentic Seacoast is a remarkable place for winter star gazing. The centerpiece of this dazzling display is Orion the Hunter. As the son of Neptune, it’s fitting that this excellent fisherman dominates the magical night sky.

6. Cross Country Skiing on the Trans Canada Trail
Sign out some cross country skis from the Guysborough Fitness Centre (yes, they’re also free!) and ski the 26 kilometre trail that takes you from the harbour to the back woods above the bay. The North Odgen swinging bridge over the Salmon River is a beautiful spot on the trail.

7. Make a Snowman
Dive into the DesBarrres Manor Inn tickle trunk to find the latest in snowman fashion and make a snowman on the front lawn to greet guests.  The Bay’s wet snow is the perfect building material.

8. Snow Balls
You’re too busy for snow balls in the City with all the rushing and meetings.  Channel that inner kid during a weekend getaway with a friendly snow ball challenge.

9. Guysborough Tree Lighting
On December 4th friends gather for the annual community tree lighting in the Rare Bird Courtyard on the harbour.  Hot chocolate, cookies and carols take you back to a time forgotten.

Pile of weathered stones

10. Ice Fishing
Mllford Haven is a popular spot for ice fishing.  Fishing huts dot the Haven as locals’ fish for smelt in the cold waters.
